A crusher is selected to perform a duty on material with particular characteristics. A project owner considering competing offers needs a feed description that represents the proposed mining schedule. Without it, apparent agreement on throughput can conceal different assumptions about the size, competence, moisture or handling behaviour of the material that will actually arrive.

Give suppliers a common duty

The enquiry should state the intended feed characteristics, operating schedule and required product, with uncertainty identified. The processing team should explain how the evidence supports that description. CIM's mineral-processing guidance stresses representative samples and the connection between test work and design. A hypothetical supplier assessment based on dry, uniform material may not cover the conditions expected during a different part of the mining sequence. The owner should reconcile those differences before comparing quoted capacity, power and capital expenditure. A common equipment name is insufficient to establish that suppliers have priced the same processing task.

Investigate variation with consequences

The test programme should identify the material changes most likely to affect the proposed circuit. Specialists need to select appropriate methods and samples, with their geological location preserved. An average feed description can be useful for some calculations while leaving difficult operating periods unresolved. The committee should understand which conditions the preferred design accommodates and which require separate handling or operational controls. Increasing equipment capacity may be one option, but the evaluation should also consider feed preparation, scheduling or blending where technically justified. Each alternative needs its own costs and evidence rather than a generic allowance for variability.

Include the equipment around the crusher

Feeders, conveyors, transfer points, storage and maintenance access help determine how the circuit operates. A crusher's standalone rating does not establish the capacity of those connected systems. The owner should examine the route through the circuit and identify where interruptions or handling problems could occur. The design review needs appropriate safety and engineering input for the actual material and layout. Investors should request a reconciled process boundary so the capital budget includes the systems required to deliver the quoted duty, with responsibilities clear at interfaces between equipment suppliers and construction packages.

Specify what acceptance will demonstrate

The procurement file should define performance testing, the conditions represented and the treatment of material outside the agreed duty. The team needs reliable measurement of feed and product characteristics during the test. A successful trial should be reported within that boundary. Owners can then compare operating evidence with the original design assumptions as mining progresses. Investors gain a clearer capacity case when the equipment's demonstrated role is visible within the full circuit. The commercial objective is dependable preparation of the planned feed, with a design that acknowledges variability before the crusher becomes a fixed point around which the rest of the project must adapt.
