Temporary power can keep a project moving while permanent infrastructure is completed. Without a clear transition plan, the temporary arrangement may remain longer than intended, carrying costs and operating dependencies that the original budget treated as short lived.

State what the arrangement supports

The temporary supply should have a defined purpose and be reviewed by appropriate technical specialists. Supporting construction activities may differ from supporting a plant during commissioning or routine operation. Management should not assume that an arrangement suited to one phase can simply continue into another without reviewing its duty, responsibilities and relevant requirements.

Track the full recurring cost

Rental, fuel, maintenance, mobilisation and supervision can sit in different accounts. Bringing them together makes the continuing cost visible. A delayed permanent connection may otherwise appear as a schedule issue while the financial consequence accumulates quietly across departments, making the temporary arrangement seem cheaper than it is when considered as a complete operating service.

Define transition prerequisites

The switch to permanent supply may require testing, coordination and an appropriate operating window. Those activities should have owners and dates. Waiting for the permanent asset to be physically complete before planning the transition can extend the temporary period unnecessarily, especially when specialist support or external acceptance must be arranged in advance.

Reassess when dates move

A substantial extension should trigger a new decision about the suitability and economics of the temporary plan. Continuing by default can be more expensive than another properly assessed option. For investors, the useful signal is active management of the bridge between project phases. Temporary infrastructure should remain a deliberate response to a defined need, with a credible route to its planned retirement.
