Two sites report identical utilisation percentages, but one excludes planned maintenance and the other includes it. The numbers appear comparable while describing different operating realities. A group dashboard can therefore create false confidence in its consistency. Before using performance measures to allocate capital or judge managers, the enterprise needs to understand exactly how each figure is constructed.
Define the denominator
Many disagreements begin with what is counted as available capacity, scheduled time or eligible demand. The denominator can influence a percentage as much as the result itself. A short definition should explain those choices and the treatment of exceptions, allowing readers to understand whether a change reflects better performance or merely a different calculation of the opportunity to perform.
Keep local context
A common definition does not eliminate genuine differences between sites. Equipment, product mix and operating conditions may still affect the comparison. The dashboard can preserve that context without abandoning consistency. The aim is to make differences interpretable, helping management identify useful questions rather than ranking sites through a number that ignores the work each location is actually required to do.
Control revisions
When a definition changes, historical comparisons may need explanation or recalculation. Quietly updating a metric can make improvement appear larger than it is. Recording the change and its effect protects continuity and allows the business to retain a sensible view of progress, particularly where the measure informs incentives, investment choices or external communication about operating performance over several periods.
Use comparison constructively
Once definitions are aligned, managers can investigate why results differ and whether one site's practice could help another. The measure then supports learning rather than a contest over calculation. A credible group dashboard begins with shared meaning, allowing a common label to represent a genuinely comparable operating question while leaving enough detail to understand the answer.
